Investment casting 101

Looking for an effective way to produce metal components with complex shapes and sizes? The investment casting process may be the ideal solution. Investment casting can create almost any required part configuration in a cost-effective and time-saving manner.

Investment casting is a manufacturing process in which a wax pattern is created and then coated with a ceramic slurry to create a mould. The wax is then melted out of the ceramic mould and molten metal is poured into the cavity. The molten metal solidifies, and the ceramic shell is then broken or blasted off, creating a metal casting. This method has several advantages over other production processes.

Benefits of investment casting:

  • An alternative to manufacturing processes such as machining and stamping
  • Highly accurate parts
  • Rapid production of high-quality components
  • Economical manufacturing process
  • Wide range of alloys – including bronze, steel, aluminium, iron and brass
